Organic all the way The label organic has turned into a buzzword and often leads to more confusion than understanding when it comes to toys. Commonly, organic is an attribute that is used to distinguish products from conventionally grown ingredients or materials. This means that organic cotton is cultivated free from pesticides, fertilizers or any other toxics that are potentially harmful. Organic lamb’s wool refers to the way sheep are raised and nurtured: without the use of growth hormones or genetically modified additives. Certification is the key The key element is that a manufacturer can only label his products as organic in marketing and advertising materials, if the product has obtained organic certification. sigikid’s organic line is certified by the German labs LGA and TUV, public corporations for independent testing and product certifications. |
Green products
sigikid’s organic line is manufactured in our joint venture in Romania. Our organic cotton is imported from Turkey and the organic lamb’s wool comes from Australia. Even though organic materials are more readily available these days, organic toys tend to come at a higher price tag due to the more demanding production and certification process. It is also important to note that a product can rarely be labeled 100% organic in the strictest sense, due to toy safety regulations that can override the use of certain materials. We use flame retardant threads and non-toxic finishings for safety concerns, just to illustrate certain limitations. An alternative to sigikid’s all organic line is a line that is equally focused on natural materials but uses conventional cotton and wool instead. In this category, you find one of our greenest products: heating cushions. Heating cushions are filled with cherry stones, a by-product of cherries. Placed in the microwave, cherry stones soak up heat and release it for a gentle warming effect. This system works equally well for a cooling effect in the freezer. Not only are sigikid’s heating cushions fast to warm up, they are also real energy savers: the cushions consume a fraction of the energy needed in comparison to hot water bottles. Sustainability sigikid’s products are made to last. All of our products are machine washable in the gentle cycle, with the idea in mind that sigikid toys are companions for generations to come. We want you to enjoy our products and that also means that we place a big focus on sustainable parts. We prefer a BPA-free plastic rattle to a wooden one if it means that the life of the toy as a whole will be longer. We oppose disposing things after only a few uses or replacing it by a new toy if something wears out or gets dirty. |
